Aldine

Trying to start a relationship with a new printer in New York can be pretty intimidating. Where to even start?! What are the budgets? How how prompt and clear is the communication? More importantly, what are their capabilities and how is the work?

I decided to reach out to Aldine based on their client roster, proximity to my office and surprisingly enough, Yelp! reviews. One in particular made an impact. A person frantically trying to find a place to print a resume before an interview went to Aldine thinking it was more of a Kinkos, and was met with kindness as well as two free copies of their CV. How could I not want to know about this place?

After a few positive email interactions and client OK, I visited Adline's shop this morning and was incredibly impressed! The staff was super courteous, welcoming and really listened to everything my client and I had to say. My inner printer was so excited to go on a tour of the shop and get close to the presses. Ah yes, the smell of sticky, shiny, ink! All of the work was super sharp, thoughtful and held to a very high standard. Also - everyone on press had a really good vibe. Those things matter, you know?

These guys were super inspiring. Now I'm dying to get inky again. Sad to say I haven't had press access in a few years so all of my personal printing has been relegated to stamping and hand pressed linocuts. I don't think I've ever felt this good after a Tuesday morning meeting. Shout out to the awesome folks at Aldine - thank you for doing it RIGHT!

Ulla Johnson SS16 Campaign

A few months ago I went on a meandering walk around lower Manhattan hunting for these wonderfully moody ads I designed for Ulla Johnson's Spring 2016 collection. My favorite part about finding these in their environment was watching slow transition to become physically part of the landscape where they'd been posted. Even though the environments are man made and covered with paint, glue and all sorts of other New York construction gunk, the transition of the printed material back into dirt (allbeit city dirt) was beautiful.

More of these guys in the wild below:

Current Listening : Moi Je

Recently discovered these guys via a Sébastien Tellier themed Spotify radio station. I've had "Suis" on a loop the past two days while I've been working. Instant transport to cruising the 1 from Venice to Malibu on our last LA trip. Grove away internet!

Ulla Johnson Fall 2016

Presentation Program

Presentation Program

Happy to share the programs I designed for Ulla Johnson's Fall 2016 presentation! The presentation was artful, considered and filled with covetable pieces made from materials sourced responsibly from all over the world. The flowers from Saipua reinforced the wild, confident, romanticism of the collection. So grateful to be involved in this moment of beauty and powerful expression!

Walking around the space in Industria Superstudio, I was able to get quick shots of a few of my favorite looks (no small feat for a short lady surrounded by bundled up fashion peeps and tall photogs) and document the incredible amaranthus and dyed baby's breath.

I also was asked by Ulla's team to design the digital invitations for the presentation. They provided a selection of images from which I created a text and photo combination that was the right fit for the mood. The opening statement from the season's program frames the visual -  "For fall 2016 Ulla Johnson introduces a fin de siècle story of opulent textures and lavish pattern, gilded nymphs framed in a cabinet of curiosities."

It's always exciting to work on a fun project with a great team and even more so such a treat to attend the event you've created ephemera for. I am filled to the brim with happiness and gratitude!

Hey Ladies!

In the wake of Rachel Feinstein's incredible portfolio "The 7 Ages of Women" in NYMag and in an attempt to KonMari my apartment, I thought it would be nice to share these funny card collages I made a little while ago.

When I was younger, I loved writing letters and sending art in the mail. It was nice to have a physical reminder of a friendship developed earlier in time - sending letters to a distant cousin in Eastern Europe, writing to a friend from Girl Scout Camp and attaching a souvenir from a beach trip or even just a note to a friend from school on special Sanrio stationary from the mall. Because of this, many of the older people in my life would give me stationary they'd amassed over the years but never used. The cards were never really anything I deemed worthy of my personal adolescent correspondence; but I saved them anyway because they were weird, cool and old.

When I was in-between apartments I found all of these old cards, and also a bunch of my Dad's strange paperback film history books from the 70's. The heroins from these early movies were so striking, I needed them to escape these worn, soon-to-be-recycled, relics. The offset printing and varied textures from the old stationary felt so right as a partner in crime and a worthy vehicle for these women to see the light of day again. So, there they met. Now, these old women, old movies, and old paper are new again, ready to venture back into the world.
